The Holistic Foundations of Gut Health

Held online on Thursday, 19th September, from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.

  • These sessions are suitable for final year students or practitioners wanting to develop a deeper understanding of the key topics covered each month.

  • Digestive Process and Enzyme Function: We will review the stages of digestion from mouth to elimination, focusing on the importance of digestive enzymes and stomach acid. You'll gain insights into common digestive issues such as bloating, reflux, and indigestion, and learn strategies for improving digestive function naturally.

  • The Role of the Microbiome: Delving into the diverse world of gut bacteria, we will cover the significance of maintaining a balanced microbiome. You'll learn about the impact of diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors on gut flora and how to cultivate a thriving microbial community through prebiotics, probiotics, and fermented foods.

  • Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection: We will explore the profound relationship between the gut and the brain, discussing how emotional stress, mental health, and cognitive function are intimately linked with gut health. This includes understanding the vagus nerve's role in communication between these systems and how to support a healthy gut-brain axis.

  • Food as Medicine: Emphasising the power of whole foods, we will discuss how to use food to heal and maintain gut health. This includes identifying gut-healing foods, understanding the role of anti-inflammatory diets, and creating meal plans that support digestion and microbiome health.

  • Detoxification and Gut Health: We will cover the importance of detoxification pathways in gut health, focusing on liver function, bile flow, and the elimination of toxins. You’ll learn how to support these processes through diet, herbal remedies, and lifestyle practices.

  • Gut Health and Immunity: Exploring the gut's role as a critical component of the immune system, we will discuss how to strengthen gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and the impact of gut health on overall immune function.

  • Review of Diagnostic Tests for Digestive Health: We will review the various diagnostic tests available to evaluate each part of your digestive system. This will include tests for identifying leaky gut, dysbiosis, poor digestion, and nutrient absorption. You’ll learn how to interpret these tests and use the results to guide your healing journey, focusing on personalised interventions that address the root causes of your digestive imbalances.
